Campaigners, such as the campaign
group Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI), are opposing the way in
which the changes were introduced, but do not argue against state pension age
The age changes for state pension for women have meant a rise in age from 60 to 65 to reach state pension entitlement. Further increases to bring it into line with men and will go up to 66 by 2020, and 67 by 2028.
State Pension compensation for WASPIs
With a general election fast approaching, there have been various pledges from Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party about awarding WASPis compensation. Among the pledges, some parties have addressed 1950s women who have been affected by the changes to the state pension age.
The Green Party have been supporting WASPIs campaign. They have said that under the Universal Basic Income policy, “every single WASPI woman” would receive a weekly payment within three months in the event of a Green Government taking office.
Green Party pledge.
“The Green New Deal will transform our social welfare system by phasing in a Universal Basic Income (UBI), an unconditional financial payment to everyone at a level above their subsistence needs.”
“These women, represented by the campaign Group WASPI (Women against State Pension Inequality) have been penalised by unnecessarily abrupt changes to the pension age brought in by the Coalition Government and it is right that are first to feel the benefits of UBI.”
The Green Party says this would be phased in with a view to all adults getting the full rate of UBI by 2025, with “the first tranche of people to receive it being women born in the 1950s”.
Amelia Womack, Deputy Leader of the Green Party.
Following the announcement, Amelia Womack, Deputy Leader of the
Green Party, exclusively told the Express newspaper
“Our Universal Basic
Income policy will create a safety net for every single person in the UK.
first people that would receive this payment would be WASPI Women.
supported WASPIs through their campaign and putting them first in the queue is
our way of repaying their lifetime of contributions to society and repairing
the injustice caused by the pension age changes.
why within the first three months of a Green Government taking office, every
single WASPI woman would receive a weekly payment, which would increase to £178
a week within two years.”
Green Party has pledged that everyone would receive UBI, with an adult rate of
£89 per week, or a pension rate of £178 per week.
This would then be scaled up to the full UBI pension rate over
Green Party confirmed that they would retain the current schedule for state
pension age rises “to reflect welcome increases to lifespans”.
“Under UBI, there will no longer be a sharp ‘cliff’ between being of working age and reaching state retirement age – throughout your lifetime you will receive an unconditional weekly payment from the Government, with this increasing when you reach retirement age,” they added.
Liberal Democrats also show support for those affected by the state pension age changes for women.
They pledge to,
“Retain the Triple Lock on the basic state pension, so that
it rises in line with the highest of wages, prices or 2.5 per cent.
Ensure that the women born in the 1950s are properly compensated
for the failure of government to properly notify them of changes to the state
pension age, in line with the recommendations of the parliamentary ombudsman.
“Address continuing inequalities in pensions law for those in same-sex relationships.”
Reaction from WASPI.
Reacting to the pledge, WASPI said: “WASPI welcome the Liberal
Democrats commitment to compensate 1950s born women, especially its pledge to
respect the Parliamentary Ombudsman’s recommendations.
“Maladministration has been the crux of WASPI’s campaign and we have pursued action through the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) who are currently deciding whether to continue investigating the complaints they have received following the unsuccessful judicial review.”
“WASPI is also pleased to see a commitment to addressing pension inequalities in same-sex couples as WASPI women in same-sex relationships have been doubly discriminated against resulting in tens of thousands of pounds being lost due to changes to their State Pension age.”
Labour commits to payouts for women who have lost out.
Under a Labour
government, women born between 6 April 1950 and 5 April 1955 would be paid £100
for each week of entitlement lost.
born between 6 April 1955 and 6 April 1960 would receive smaller amounts.
Angela Rayner told BBC News: “The government failed the women who were
born in the 1950s. They stole their pension.”
The maximum compensation would be £31,300, with an average payment of £15,380.
How the conservatives responded when asked the question:-
“Does the Tory manifesto promise to address the Waspi women’s pension issue. And if so what measures are envisaged and at what cost?”
No, there is no promise to the Waspi women in the manifesto.
